APLAUD (Ards Peninsula Learning and Understanding Difficulties) Parent Support Group was set up by a Lifestart parent in March 2005. To date the group have provided training and awareness opportunities and resources for families.
CURRENT ACTIVITIES
Play for All
APLAUD parents have identified an opportunity to access play suitable to their children’s needs. Barnardo’s Play for All is an inclusive play and leisure project for disabled children accompanied by a friend or sibling. Barnardos run Play for All in Bangor on the second Saturday of every month from 2pm to 4pm. There are currently 12 vacancies in the Bangor club and as a pilot scheme from January to June 09, Barnardos are offering these places to children in the Peninsula and transport will be provided. Children must be registered in advance, if you would like to know more or to register please contact Claire at Lifestart Mid-Ards or Siobhan Strattan at Barnardos on 028 90 658105. Dr Joanne Atkinson – Autism Awareness
Joanne gave two interesting and in depth talks on a wide range of topics including ASD and how to recognise it, the difference between Autism & Aspergers, Autism Sensory issues and therapies available.
The event was attended by parents, Health Visitors, Classroom Assistants, Playgroup workers, Social Workers, Teachers, Surestart and Lifestart Staff. The event proved to be highly successful and highlighted the need for everyone involved in the welfare of these children to have access to information, knowledge, skills shared by Joanne.
RECENT ACTIVITIES
Craniosacral Therapy
The APLAUD group organised a one off event in June 2007, which was a presentation and talk by Anne Matthews, BSc Hons Physio, DC, Dip Biomech, FCC, FBCA - Chiropractor and Craniosacral Therapist for children and pregnant women from Belfast Chiropractic Clinic.
Brain Gym
In November 2007, 10 parents completed the Foundation stage training of Brain Gym, facilitated by Ursula Smith, Braincells.
Provision of Toy and Book Library
Lifestart Mid-Ards provides a selection of books and toys for parents and children to borrow in our office in Kircubbin. Please let us know of resources that we do not have which may be of use to you.
Planned events
On behalf of Aplaud, we are carrying out a survey to establish what parents and children would like. Further events will be planned around the needs identified.
